Calabar led the way Friday as seven Jamaican teams qualified for the High School Boys’ 4×100 Championship of America on Saturday (27 April) at the Penn Relays.
The reigning champion at Penn Relays and national record holder popped off the early heats with a strong qualifying time of 41.41secs, in less than ideal conditions.
Rosean Young, Christopher Taylor, Tyreke Wilson and Dejour Russell, in running order, look to repeat their 39.00 flat record breaking triumph from 2017.
Akin to Champs, they will have sturdy competition from the likes of Kingston College who qualified for Saturday afternoon’s final with a faster time of 41.24, thanks in large part to Jhevaughn Mattherson.
Jamaica College (JC) had the third fastest qualifying mark of 41.75, followed by Ruseas’ 41.81.
Although they failed to break 42 seconds in qualifying, St. Jago, 42.31, St. Elizabeth Technical, 42.29, Wolmer’s, 42.42 and Papine, 41.81 also persevered through the adverse weather and qualified.
Other than the Jamaican teams, St Augustine of the Bahamas and DeMatha Catholic of Maryland in the US ran 42.43 and 41.93, respectively to round out the field of nine.
The Boys Championship of America is scheduled for Saturday at 1:45pm EST.
