EUGENE, Ore. — Jamaica’s leading sprint hopes safely navigated the opening morning of the World Athletics U20 Championships on Wednesday (5 Aug), with Shanoya Douglas and Gary Card advancing comfortably from the 100 meters as the Caribbean nation enjoyed a productive start at Hayward Field.
Douglas, one of the favorites for the women’s title, looked composed throughout her heat, easing to victory in 11.35 seconds to secure an automatic place in the semifinals.
Card followed with an equally controlled display in the men’s 100m, cruising home in 10.07 seconds while appearing to conserve energy for the rounds ahead. Only American Tate Taylor, regarded as one of Card’s chief challengers for gold, ran faster in the opening round with 10.05.
Jamaica strengthened its position in the women’s sprint with Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, who won her heat in 11.21 to also advance automatically.
The semifinal lineup now features intriguing Jamaica-United States matchups, with Douglas drawn against Mariah Maxwell, who qualified in 11.33, while Terrelonge will face Mia Maxwell, who clocked 11.37.
The success extended beyond the sprints.
Joel Morgan advanced from the men’s 800m after leading at the bell in 55.6 seconds before finishing fourth in his heat in 1:51.75, enough to secure an automatic qualifying place.
Kevongaye Fowler also progressed, producing a personal-best 2:04.31 to reach the women’s 800m semifinals.
Jamaica opened the morning session on another positive note by winning its mixed 4x400m relay heat. Jabari Matheson, Shameika McLean, Jordan Rehedul and Kristen Herbert combined for a season’s best 3:21.47 to book a place in the final later Wednesday.
The only setback for Jamaica came in the men’s 100m, where Dontae Watson failed to advance.
