Kemarrio Bygrave and Rickeisha Simms Lead Jamaican Sweep in 1500m Events At Carifta Games 2024

Jamaican athletes showcased their talent at the 51st Carifta Games, sweeping all four 1500m finals in a dominating display at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.

Kemarrio Bygrave, representing Jamaica, executed a well-timed race, surging from third place in the last 200m to seize victory with a time of 3:58.10. He was closely pursued by teammate Jaquan Coke, who also displayed a strong final lap, finishing in 3:58.38. Bermuda’s Jake Brislane, who led the field into the final straight, secured the bronze in 3:58.83.

Bygrave expressed gratitude, stating, “I have to thank God that this year I am finishing my season healthy, especially after the disappointment I experienced last year. I wanted to prove I am a champion.”

In the Girls’ 1500-meter Run Under 20 category, Rickeisha Simms of Jamaica claimed the top spot with a time of 4 minutes and 31.94 seconds, closely followed by compatriot Kaydeen Johnson, clocking in at 4:32.49. Johnson led the race until the last 100m before being overtaken by Simms. Trinidad and Tobago’s Kaleigh Forde secured third place with a time of 4:41.71.

The Boys’ 1500-meter Run Under 17 saw Jamaican athlete Shemar Green clinch victory in 4:11.91. Wyndel Beyde of Aruba followed closely behind with a time of 4:12.80, securing the second position. Jamaican runner Sekani Brown claimed third place with a time of 4:15.21.

In the Girls’ 1500-meter Run Under 17, Jamaican athletes continued to impress. Dallia Fairweather secured the gold medal with a time of 4:45.86, edging out compatriot Alikay Reynolds, who finished just milliseconds behind at 4:46.14. Trinidad and Tobago’s Shian Lewis secured the third position with a time of 4:48.58.

Jamaica’s dominance in the track events underscored the country’s rich talent pool, for which the schools deserve credit for nurturing.
