A supporter of the EPL team, Arsenal FC, Rudisha is from the ethic group, Maasai and follows a strong athletic background, his father Daniel being a part of his country’s 4x400m relay team which won a silver medal at the 1968 Olympics while his mother, Naomi was a 400m hurdler. To quote a BBC commentator, “He is the greatest 800m runner of all time and he may also be the nicest man in his sport.”
He is the first and only athlete to go below 1:41 in his event and holds the three fastest, six of the eight fastest, and half of the twenty fastest times ever run. He has won a record 3 consecutive Track & Field Athlete of the Year awards (tied with Carl Lewis), and also won the IAAF World Athlete of the Year award in 2010.
He attended the Kimuron Secondary School in Iten, Keiyo District, which is known for nurturing several top runners including Wilson Kipketer, the previous 800 m world record holder, broken in 2010 with a time of 1:41.09 while racing in the ISATF meeting in Berlin. Just a week later, he broke the record again at the Rieti Diamond League Meeting, lowering it to 1:41.01.
