On this day, August 8 2012, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won silver in the women’s 200m at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

American Allyson Felix won the event in 21.88, but Fraser-Pryce finished ahead of other high-profiled sprinters.

Fraser-Pryce’s personal best run of 22.09 got the better of American Carmelita Jeter, 22.14 and Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004 champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, 22.38.

Four days earlier, Fraser-Pryce ran 10.75 to beat Jeter, 10.78 and Veronica Campbell-Brown, 10.81 to win the 100m crown.

“This is the hardest double I have done in a while,” said Fraser-Pryce back then.

“Being here is not just all about physical strength, it’s about mental strength. It’s about the encouragement we get from home,” she added.
Also, on this day, Hansle Parchment won his first Olympic Games medal.
Parchment ran 13.12, a national record at the time, to finish behind American Aries Merritt, 12.92 and Jason Richardson, 13.04.

“I am not as happy as I wanted to be, but it’s a first that I did so I am satisfied with that,” said Parchment after the final.

On the same day, Kaliese Spencer narrowly missed a medal. She ran a season-best 53.66 for 4th in the women’s 400m hurdles.
