Jamaica’s Robert Miller Smashes Record at Carifta Games with 400m Hurdles Victory

Robert Miller of Jamaica made history by shattering the Boys 400 Meter Hurdles Under 17 record on Sunday’s (31 March) second day of the 51st Carifta Games 2024 at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.

Following closely behind Miller, Akanye Samuel-Francis from Saint Kitts and Nevis, the winner in 2023, claimed silver with a time of 52.88 seconds, while Fransico Williams of Jamaica secured the bronze medal in 53.19 seconds.

In his post-race interview, Miller expressed his satisfaction with the gold medal but admitted his ambition to run sub-52. “I am happy with the gold medal, but I wanted to run sub-52,” he said.

Shamer Blake of Jamaica clinched gold in the Boys 400 Meter Hurdles Under 20, setting a blazing pace with a time of 51.21 seconds. Princewell Martin, also from Jamaica, followed closely behind, securing the silver medal in 51.34 seconds. Dorian Charles of Trinidad and Tobago claimed the bronze with a time of 52.70 seconds.

Meanwhile, Michelle Smith of the Virgin Islands showcased her dominance in the Girls 400 Meter Hurdles Under 20, crossing the finish line in a remarkable 56.28 seconds to claim the gold medal. Kelly Ann Carr of Jamaica took silver with a time of 57.02 seconds, while Aaliyah Mullings, also from Jamaica, secured the bronze in 59.80 seconds.

Not to be outdone, Nastassia Fletcher of Jamaica demonstrated her prowess in the one-lap event, adding the Girls 400 Meter Hurdles Under 17 title in 1:00.10 to her 400m title on Saturday’s opening day. Darvinique Dean of the Bahamas claimed silver with a time of 1:00.66, while Jenna-Marie Thomas of Trinidad and Tobago took the bronze with a time of 1:01.03.
