Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts has claimed the nation’s fourth medal at the Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships after retaining the silver medal in the women’s triple jump final on Monday, July 18.
Ricketts, the national champion and ranked number two in the world this year, recorded a season’s best jump of 14.89 meters in her first attempt. Her leap of 14.89 meters was a then world-leading jump.
As a result, she has replicated her podium finish, where she captured the silver medal in the event at the Doha 2019 World Championships. Ricketts has now become the first Jamaican woman to claim back-to-back world championships medals in the event.
She has joined the likes of Trecia-Kaye Smith, winner of the Helsinki 2005 World Championships title, as Jamaican women to claim World Championships medals for the nation in the event.
Meanwhile, her compatriots Kimberly Williams, the 2014 Commonwealth champion, recorded a jump of 14.29 meters to place seventh. National long jump champion, Ackelia Smith (13.90), had to settle for twelfth place.
Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela, who leapt to a world-leading jump of 15.47, claimed the title. Tori Franklin of the United States secured the bronze medal with a jump of 14.72 meters.
In addition, the golden ladies, Shericka Jackson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah, who swept the women’s 100 meters final on Sunday, safely booked their spots in the semi-finals of the women’s 200 meters.
Jackson cruised to 22.33 for victory in heat one, while Fraser-Pryce (22.26) and Thompson-Herah (22.41) finished second in their respective heats.
Jamaica currently sits fourth in the medal standings with four medals – 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.
