The Cayman Islands Athletic Association has been banned from international competitions.

The association’s president, Lancelott Barnes, communicated the sanction in a letter to over 100 members on July 25th.

Barnes wrote: “On Friday, July 25th, the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) imposed a sanction on the Cayman Islands Athletic Association.

According to the letter, “the sanction levelled against the association is in respect to refunds to be made by the CARIFTA 2019 LOC for added charges made to member federations that contravened NACAC standing policy.”

Cayman Islands athletes will be unable to participate in any NACAC and World Athletics event, including the Olympic Games unless the ban is lifted in short order.

Kemar Hyman was the lone Cayman athlete to qualify for last year’s Doha 2019 World Championships in Qatar. The Cayman Islands also failed to win a medal at Carifta Games they hosted in 2019.

“We are aware of the severity of the sanction imposed, and do not take it lightly,” Barnes said.

“We remain committed in keeping you informed on this and any other association matters,” concluded his letter to the association members.

  • To my understanding from what I read, because they are not winning any medal and they have only athlete in 2019 in the world championship game so they don’t think they are relevant, so they are ban

  • The article tells why they are being banned. zi didn’t even know that there were any Caymanian athletes after Cydonie Mothersill.
