Blake leads the world with 9.95 at MVP meet

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s 2011 World 100m champion, Yohan Blake, ran a world leading 9.95 to win the men’s 100m at Saturday’s MVP track and field meet at the National Stadium in Kingston.

Blake, who caught the fast starting Andrew Fisher (MVP) immediately after coming out of his drive phase, pulled away to beat Rasheed Dwyer (Sprintec) and Zharnel Hughes (HPTC), who both did 10.10. The wind reading was +1.4m/s.

Blake, who has been affected by hamstring problems for the past three years, erased the previous world leading of 9.96 by South African, Akani Simbine. Fisher faded into fourth with 10.14.

Warren Weir had earlier won heat 9 in 10.07 ahead of his Racers’ clubmate, Michael Frater, 10.17.

Jura Levy (Sprintec) was the women’s 100m winner in 11.25 to beat GC Foster College’s, Sashalee Forbes, 11.29 and Gayon Evans, also of Sprintec 11.30.

Antigua and Barbuda’s, Miguel Francis, representing Racers, topped the men’s 200m in 20.11. He finished ahead of Oshane Bailey of Sprintec, 20.42 and Akan’s Javon Francis 20.54.

Anneisha McLaughin-Whilby won the women’s 200m in 22.78 ahead of her Sprintec training partners Anastasia Le-Roy 22.85 and Audra Segree 23.18

In the men’s 400m, Jonia McDonald of MVP, ran the fastest overall time of 46.32 to beat Peter Matthews of Racers,46.38, in heat 9.

Josef Robertson won heat 8 in 46.45, while Jaheel Hyde of Cameron Blazers took heat 7 in 46.66 ahead of Devaughn Ellington of Petersfield, 46.67.

World Championships bronze medallist, Shericka Jackson, 52.10 and Namibia’s Tjipekapora Herunga, 52.81 were the only ladies under 53 seconds in the women’s 400m.

Annsert Whyte of Racers ran 49.39 to beat his training partner, Javan Gallimore 50.09. Ricardo Cunningham of Cameron Blazers, who picked up the one-lap obstacle this season, won heat 2 in 50.28.

Excelsior High’s, Shanice Love 54.66m in the women’s discus, Aubrery Allen of GC Foster College, 7.72m in the men’s long jump, and Tissanna Hickling of St. Jago, 6.09m, in the women’s long jump, were the best field event athletes on the day.
