Bishops and Scarborough leave for Penn Relays

Students of Bishops High and Scarborough Secondary will be competing at this year’s prestigious Penn Relays University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA beginning on Thursday, April 23.

A team of ten athletes will represent Bishops, while Scarborough will field seven competitors. 

Carifta boys under 18 200m champion Akanni Hislop will lead Bishops in action in the High schools boys 4x100m and 4x400m events.  Younger brother Ako, hurdler Aaron Lewis, Franklyn Stanisclaus and Dwight St. Hilaire are also in the line-up. Bishops High will be competing for the second year after debuting in 2014, finishing ninth in heat twelve of the High Schools Boys 4x100m clocking 49.58 seconds. 

Akanni,  Ako and St. Hillaire were members of last year’s team. Omari Benoit will contest the High Schools High jump and will be aiming improving on his 6th place finish in 2014 with a distance of 1.96m.

Anya Akili heads the list of girls representing Bishops.  The triple gold medallist at last week’s Secondary Schools’ Championships is joined by top national junior table tennis player Jasher De Gannes, Jamellia Potts and Nkoni Morrision.  Bishops will compete in the High Schools Girls 4x100m and 4x400m. In 2014 Bishops contested the 4x100m but failed to finish.

Scarborough Secondary will be making their maiden trip to the Relay. The quartet of La Shawn Roberts, Jonathan Barker, Nku, Taraffel Joseph and Jelani Alleyne will bid for gold in the High Schools Boys 4x100m and 4x400m. Scarborough athletes earned the right to compete at the Penn Relays after excelling at the National Secondary Schools Relay Festivals in February.

Fourteen year old Safiya John is the lone female for Scarborough and will vie for honours in the High Schools Girls long jump. John was a double gold medallist at the Secondary Schools Championships.

The Tobago athletes will leave Tobago on Tuesday night.
