Jamaica ended the 2022 World Athletics Championships on a high note after claiming three medals from the four finals contested at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday, July 24.
Jamaica’s Britany Anderson, who bolted to a national record of 12.31 to advance to the final of the women’s 100 meters hurdles, stormed to a wind-aided 12.23 to claim the silver medal. The previous national record of 12.32 was set by Danielle Williams in 2019 at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in London.
Anderson has now joined an elite group of women that includes the likes of Brigitte Foster-Hylton, who won the nation’s first gold medal in the event at the 2009 Berlin World Championships, Delloreen Ennis London (2009 Berlin World Championships bronze medalist), Danielle Williams, who captured the gold at the 2015 Beijing WorldChampionships and Megan Tapper, who claimed Jamaica’s first Olympic medal (bronze) in the event at the Tokyo Games last year.
Meanwhile, the new world record holder, Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, took home the gold medal in the event after storming to a time of 12.06 (+2.5w), while the Tokyo Olympic champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico claimed the bronze medal in a time of 12.23, also wind-aided.
In the men’s 4×400 meters final, the Jamaican quartet of Akeem Bloomfield, Nathon Allen, Jevaughn Powell and Christopher Taylor claimed the first and only medal for the nation’s men after crossing the line in the silver-medal spot.
They clocked a season’s best time of 2:58.58 to finish behind the United States, who won gold in a world-leading time of 2:56.17, while Belgium took home the bronze in a year’s best 2:58.72.
The Jamaican 4×400 men have added another silver medal to their world championship collection, having claimed the runner-up spot at Daegu 2011, Moscow 2013 and the 2019 Doha World Championships, respectively.
In the women’s equivalent of the event, the Jamaican relay quartet of Candice McLeod, Janieve Russell, Stephanie-Ann McPherson and Charokee Young crossed the line in a season’s best time of 3.30.74 to win the silver medal in the final of the event.
The race was won by the United States in a world leading time of 3:17.79, while Great Britain rounded out the top three in a season’s best time of 3:22.64.
Jamaica has ended the Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships with 10 medals – 2 golds, 7 silvers and 1 bronze to sit third on the final medal standings behind the United States (32) and Ethiopia (10).

Women’s 800 meters: Jamaica’s Natoya Goule, who is a seasoned campaigner for the nation in the women’s 800 meters, had to settle for a fifth-place finish in the final of the event. She crossed the line in a season’s best time of 1:57.90.
The podium finishes included gold for the Tokyo Summer Olympics champion, Athing Mu of the United States, in a world-leading time of 1:56.30, while Keely Hodgkinson of the Great Britain (1:56.38) and Kenya’s Mary Moraa (1:56.71) claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
