Jhevaughn Matherson is the new Jamaica Youth 100m record holder. The Kingston College (KC) sprinter shone brightest on day one of the 2016 Jamaica’s Carifta Trials at the National Stadium, racing to victory in the Under-18 boys’ 100m final in a legal 10.25. Behind, was Calabar High's Dejour Russell, who recorded a personal best of 10.39.
Matherson's time erased from the record books the 10.27 Jahzeel Murphy (2011) and Raheem Chambers (2014).
Meanwhile, St Elizabeth Technical's Nigel Ellis topped the Under-20 final in 10.26 after an early battle with St Jago High's Raheem Chambers, who did 10.32 for second. The wind was negative 0.3m/s.
Ellis, Matherson and Chambers are expected to face-off in the Class 1 event at Champs.
On the girls’ side, St Jago's Kimone Shaw won the Under-18 final in 11.51 ahead of Michae Harriott of Holmwood Technical 11.93, The wind reading here was +2.5m/s.
Edwin Allen’s Patrice Moody posted 11.56 to beat St Jago's Shanice Reid 11.79 for the Under-20 100m crown.
Junelle Bromfield of STETHS won the girls’ Under-20 800m final in 2:06.61 while Edwin Allen’s Cemore Donald took the Under-18 section in 2:08.85.
Shevon Parkes of Bellefield topped the Under-20 boys’ final in 1:51.27 while Javantaye Williams of Calabar 1:53.00 upset Keenan Lawrence of St. Jago 1:53.04 in the Under-18 boys’ final.
Edwin Allen High's Shannon Kallawan won the Under-20 girls' 400m hurdles in 56.80 ahead of Holmwood's Nicolee Foster 58.40, while Vere Technical's Sanique Walker crossed the line first in the Under-18 final. She did a personal best 58.68 to beat Hydel High's Shian Salmon 59.37.
Jauvaney James of St Elizabeth Technical was the Under-20 boys 400m hurdles winner in 51.67, just ahead of St Jago's Timor Barrett, 51.68.
James’ teammates at STETHS Leonardo Ledgister 53.26 and Dashinelle Dyer 54.30 were first and second in the Under-18 boys’ 400m hurdles final.
Rasheeda Downer of KC 18.81m beat his teammate Zico Campbell 17.60m in the boys’ Under-18 shot put.
The meet continues on Sunday with the 200m, 400m and sprint hurdles finals
