KINGSTON, Jamaica – Who will be the 2014 Scotiabank/JAAA Male and Female athlete of the year? That’s the question on the minds of many as they assess the names and qualities of the 10 nominees presented by JAAA Awards Selection Committee Chairman, Bernard Panton.

For the first time in years the choice has not been as obvious, due to the non-activity of some of Jamaica’s best known athletes.  The selection will be made know on Friday, December 12, 2014, during the prestigious Scotiabank/JAAA Golden Cleats Awards, scheduled to take place at the Terra Nova All Suite Hotel.

The nominees for this year awards are as follows:  For Female Athlete of the year –   Kaliese Spencer, Stephanie McPherson, Novlene Williams- Mills, Kimberly Williams  and  Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce

For the Male Athlete of the year, the nominees are Kemar Bailey- Cole, Odayne Richards, Rasheed Dwyer, Andrew Riley and  Hansle Parchment.

Nominees for Coach of the year are Stephen Francis, Fitzalbert Coleman, Lynval Swaby, Stephen Francis, and Dr. The Hon. Glen Mills, OJ.  The ceremony will also be used to present the Howard Aris Trophy and the Scotiabank Scholarship to two outstanding junior athletes.

The Golden Cleats Awards are held each year to honour the male and female athlete of the year, as well as coach of the year.  Scotiabank has been integrally involved with this event since 2010 and is part of the philanthropic initiatives of The Bank.

Each year Scotiabank hosts the event, provides scholarships of up to $250,000 to two promising athletes at the tertiary level, and presents the JAAA with equipment to assist in hosting track meets. Previously we have given a high jump bag and hurdles.  This year we will hand over an Electronic Display Board for use during field events.

This year the format of the event has been altered from a luncheon to a cocktail event and awards show ending with a live performance.
