Elaine Thompson-Herah, the reigning Olympic gold medallist in the women’s 60 meters, kicked off her 2023 campaign with a solid performance at the Queen’s/Grace Jackson Invitational Meet in Kingston on Saturday (28 Jan).

Despite only three competitors showing up for the race, Thompson-Herah clocked in at 7.15 seconds, setting her sights on a World Championship gold medal in Budapest this summer.
Jura Levy of Legacy Athletics finished second in 7.39, and Mickaell Moodie of GC Foster College third in 8.81.
The MVP Track Club had initially intended to field five athletes but pulled out due to delays in the meet schedule. Tina Clayton, Natasha Morrison, Anthonique Strachan, Jonielle Smith, and Kashekia Cameron were the athletes listed to compete.
Thompson-Herah, who is 30 years old, is determined to achieve her first World Championship gold medal and is focused on continuing to train hard in order to secure the top spot in Hungary.
“It’s the same goal even though I reset and rewind, it’s the same goal to try to get a World title, which I don’t have,” Thompson-Herah said. “It’s the same goal to just continue to stay focused and keep working hard to claim that gold in Hungary.
“I don’t think about what happened last year. I can’t dwell on that. I just move forward and look forward to this new season.”
