EUGENE (19 Jul) – Lamara Distin finished ninth in the women’s high jump at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 on Tuesday night at Hayward Field.

Distin, representing Jamaica, cleared 1.93m to record her first career world championship top 10 finish. The two-time NCAA national champion opened the competition with a first attempt clearance at 1.84m before clearing the next height of 1.89m on a first attempt.
It was at 1.96m when the highflyer bowed out with three misses.
Kimberly Williamson, who, like Distin, was competing at this level for the first time, finished 11th with a clearance of 1.89m.
Eleanor Patterson won the gold medal in the women’s high jump by clearing 2.02 metres on her 1st attempt. Patterson set an Oceanian and Australian record with her mark.
The best previous finish by Australia in the women’s high jump was 8th by Patterson in 2015.
Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine took the silver medal, also clearing 2.02, but on her 2nd attempt. This was the 7th medal for Ukraine in the high jump, with one gold, five silvers, and one bronze.
Elena Vallortigara of Italy won the bronze medal with her 2.00 clearance on her 1st attempt. It was the 4th medal for Italy in the event, after three by Antonietta Di Martino in 2007-11 (1S-2B).
Iryna Gerashchenko of Ukraine placed 4th, despite also clearing 2.00 metres, a personal best for her, but it was on her 2nd attempt.
