GWANJU, South Korea – She said they doubted her, but she never listens to negative comments. She stayed focus and believed in her coach, Stephen Francis.

Now Simoya Campbell is the fastest Jamaican female this year over 800m and the World University Games (WUG) silver medal to go with it (Watch Video, link here).

“Well what can I say. Many doubted me, but I didn’t listen. I just focused on what I needed to do and trust God to lead me on the right path,” Campbell wrote on her social media page.

“Many said all manner of things, but I remained humble, worked hard and listened to Franno (Stephen Francis), lol,” she wrote.

On Friday (10 July) Campbell produced her best run to date, 1:59.29 to finish second in the women’s 800m final in Gwangju.  Campbell, who led by some five meters at the bell, 56.41 secs, and enjoyed a wider lead into the final 80m, lost out to the fast finishing Angela Kate Petty of New Zealand 1:59.06 on the line.

And it’s because of this performance, which puts her on time, ahead of Natoya Goule, who ran 1:59.63 to win at the Jamaica Trials, Campbell said:

“Well I guess with all those things working well together, (I) just have to continue working with that formula until I reach my full potential. Thanks for all the love,” she ended.

Goule sent congratulatory message to Campbell, saying "Congrats on a great race u did very well."
Goule also said: "Our middle distance future look very bright."

MVP Track Club also tweeted: "AMAZING @SimoyaCampbell is now the 2nd fastest Jamaican woman in history over 800m with a 1:59.26 silver medal at World University Games."
