RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Usain Bolt jogged his season best to book his place in the Rio 2016 Olympics men’s 200m final.
Bolt was off to a fast start and covered Canada’s Andre de Grasse, who was outside, long before he straightened.
The two-time defending champion came off the curve and cruised the last 100 metres looking on both sides.
De Grasse, who was safe in second, crossed behind Bolt in a national record, 19.80.
Nickel Ashmeade’s 20.31 wasn’t enough to take him into the next round. He was put under early pressure from LaShawn Merritt, who was fast off the curve, to race home in 19.94secs.
Christophe Lemaitre of France ran his season best of 20.01 to take his place in the final.

Yohan Blake also missed out on the final with 20.37 in his semi-final heat, won by Alonso Edward of Panama ahead of Churandy Martina of Netherland, 20.10.
American Justin Gatlin also failed to make the final cut, finishing third in 20.13.
