TURKU, Finland (June 3) — Jamaica’s Lamara Distin cleared 1.94m to finish second in the women’s high jump at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku on Wednesday.
Distin, one of Jamaica’s best ever high jumpers, was beaten only by Ukraine’s Yuliia Levchenko, who won with 1.97m. Distin’s clearance matched her season’s consistency as she continues her build-up toward the Commonwealth Games later this year.
Jamaicans Nia Robinson produced a best leap of 6.61m to finish third in the women’s long jump, while compatriot Ackelia Smith placed fifth with 6.53m. American Monae’ Nichols won the event with 6.88m.
In the women’s shot put, Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd finished fifth with a throw of 18.78m in a competition won by American world champion Chase Jackson, who reached 20.66m.
Olympic discus champion Roje Stona took fifth in the men’s discus throw with 66.15m. Slovenia’s Kristjan Čeh topped the field with 69.13m ahead of Sweden’s Daniel Ståhl.
On the track, Assinie Wilson dipped under the 49-second barrier once again, clocking 48.98 to finish fifth in the men’s 400m hurdles. Slovenia’s Matic Ian Guček won in 48.47 ahead of Britain’s Alastair Chalmers (48.53) and Botswana’s Kemorena Tisang (48.66).
The Caribbean also had representation in the sprints. Bahamian Anthaya Charlton finished fifth in her women’s 100m heat in 11.61. The final was won by Dutch sprinter Minke Bisschops in 11.25, ahead of Hungary’s Boglárka Takács (11.33) and Australia’s Torrie Lewis (11.34).
In the men’s 100m, Cuba’s Jenns Reynold Fernández placed fifth in his heat in 10.24. Britain’s Romell Glave went on to win the final in 10.16, defeating South Africa’s Abdurahman Karriem (10.22) and the Netherlands’ Taymir Burnet (10.26).
