Yohan Blake’s stumble cost him gold on Monday’s (9 April) second day of track and field action at the #GoldCoast2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Blake, who stumbled slightly out of the blocks, never recovered and had to settle for bronze in 10.19 seconds.
Akani Simbine led South Africa home to a 1-2 finish in 10.03. Henricho Bruintjies took the silver in 10.17.
The Caribbean’s other entrants in the field, Kemar Hyman of Cayman Islands, 10.21 and St. Kitts and Nevis’ Jason Rodgers, 10.24 were 5th and 6th respectively.
Silver and Bronze for Jamaica in women’s 100m
Christana Williams and Gayon Evans, both former Edwin Allen students, pocketed silver in 11.21 and 11.22, a personal best for the latter.
Williams, one of the pre-race favorites, never react to the starter’s gun quick enough and had to depend on her top end speed to take her home.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye won the gold medal, her country’s first in track and field at these games, in 11.14.
Natasha Morrison, the third Jamaican in the final, finished 5th in 11.31 while Trinidad and Tobago’s other finalists – Khalifa ST. Fort, 11.37 and Reyare Thomas, 11.51 are 6th and 7th respectively.
O’Dayne Richards 20.80m just missed out of the men’s shot put medals. The medals went to Tomas Walsh (NZL) 21.31m, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (NGR) 21.14 and Tim Nedow (CAN) 20.91.
Three Jamaicans – Javon Francis, 45.38 season best, Rusheen McDonald, 45.77 and Demish Gaye 45.85, advanced to the men’s 400m final.
Bralon Taplin of Grenada, winner of his semi-final heat, also made progress in 45.44.
