CHORZÓW, Poland — Oblique Seville (JAM) blazed to victory in the men’s 100 meters, clocking 9.83 seconds to win the Silesia Diamond League, also known as the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, at Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland, on Sunday.
Seville held off a strong field to win his second of four Diamond League this season. Kenneth Bednarek (USA) finished second in 9.87, and Christian Coleman (USA) took third in 9.93. Earlier in the day, Seville won his heat in 9.90. Fellow Jamaican Ackeem Blake finished seventh in the second heat, clocking 10.26, which was not good fast enough to make the final.
In the women’s 100, Julien Alfred (LCA) crossed the line second in 10.83, edged only by winner Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (USA), who clocked 10.78. Jamaica had three athletes in the race: Brianna Lyston finished fourth in 10.96, Tina Clayton was sixth in 11.01, and Tia Clayton was ninth in 11.24. Sha’Carri Richardson (USA) took third in 10.96.
Marileidy Paulino (DOM) delivered the other major Caribbean win of the meet, powering to victory in the women’s 400 meters in 48.87. Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce finished second in 49.49, and countrywoman Stacey-Ann Williams placed sixth in 49.81.
Cuba turned the women’s triple jump into a Caribbean showcase. Leyanis Pérez Hernández soared to second with a mark of 14.91 meters, and Davisleydi Velazco landed third at 14.84. Thea Lafond of Dominica placed fourth at 14.58, Liadagmis Povea of Cuba finished sixth at 14.18, and Jamaica’s Ackelia Smith rounded out the Caribbean contingent in eighth at 13.97. Saly Sarr (SEN) won the event at 15.08.
Romaine Beckford (JAM) cleared 2.29 meters to finish second in the men’s high jump, behind winner Gianmarco Tamberi (ITA), who cleared 2.31. Mateusz Kołodziejski (POL) was third at 2.26.
Jamaica’s Roje Stona and Ralford Mullings placed sixth and seventh in the men’s discus throw, with marks of 67.65 and 66.44 meters. Mykolas Alekna (LTU) won the event, launching the discus 72.58 meters.
Megan Simmonds (JAM) finished second in the women’s 100 hurdles in 12.62 seconds. Compatriots Ackera Nugent and Danielle Williams placed fourth and fifth, running 12.64 and 12.70. Alaysha Johnson (USA) won in 12.52.
Orlando Bennett (JAM) placed fifth in the men’s 110 hurdles, clocking 13.25. Ja’Kobe Tharp (USA) won in 13.05.
Lamara Distin (JAM) tied for ninth in the women’s high jump at 1.89 meters. Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR) won the event, clearing 2.00.
Nia Robinson (JAM) placed ninth in the women’s long jump at 6.29 meters. Alyssa Jones (USA) won at 6.98.
Danniel Thomas-Dodd (JAM) finished eighth in the women’s shot put at 18.16 meters. Chase Jackson (USA) won with a throw of 20.92.
In events without Caribbean entrants, Busang Collen Kebinatshipi (BOT) won the men’s 400 in 43.59, Alison dos Santos (BRA) won the men’s 400 hurdles in 46.43, and Armand Duplantis (SWE) cleared 6.20 meters to win the men’s pole vault.
