Massive Payouts at Historical Women-Only 776 Invitational
The competition, designed to significantly uplift the financial stakes of women’s track events, will see the winners of several races walking away with $60,000, a substantial leap over what is typically awarded at Diamond League events. Runners-up will pocket $25,000, and third-place finishers will secure $10,000.
Ohanian, a vocal advocate for women’s sports and owner of women-focused enterprises like Angel City and the sports bar The Sports Bra in Portland, emphasized the transformative vision behind their initiative. “At 776, we believe in the power of sports to drive positive change and inspire future generations,” Ohanian stated. “By investing in women’s track, we aim to build a best-in-class event that elevates the profile of top women athletes and creates a more equitable sporting landscape.”
The investment comes at a crucial time as the sporting world eyes the upcoming Paris Olympics, with more details about the event expected in the lead-up.
Gabby Thomas expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration and its potential impact on the sport. “Through this investment, we hope to not only provide athletes with the resources and visibility they need to have enduring careers but also to inspire fans worldwide with a reinvented format to experience the best of our sport,” Thomas said.
Echoing her excitement, Thomas also took to social media to highlight the significance of the event. “SO excited to partner with @alexisohanian as he hosts the @776fund invitational this year following the Olympic Games!!” she tweeted.
“This event will not only have the biggest purse of any women’s track event, but it will truly make a much-needed impact on our sport. This investment in women’s sports is another huge step towards gender parity in sport – LFG!!! 👏🏽🙌🏽 More details to follow soon.”
The 776 Invitational promises not just to be a competitive spectacle but a pivotal moment in advancing gender equality in sports.
