Sixteen athletes from the defending ISSA Boy’s and Girl’s Championships teams, Kingston College and Edwin Allen High, left for Trinidad on Tuesday (7 Feb) to participate in the Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools Relays, taking place at the Hasley Crawford National Stadium on Thursday.

Both teams will be competing in the 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays.

Leading the Kingston College team is Bouwahjgie Nkrumie, a World U20 100 meters silver medalist and national junior record holder, who started off his season with a win at the Youngster Goldsmith Classics on the weekend. The team includes Emmanuel Rwotomiya, Marcinho Rose, Yourie Lawrence Clarke, and Nicholas Francis.

For the Edwin Allen team, Trinidad and Tobago’s Natasha Fox, who placed fourth in the high school girls’ open 400 meters hurdles at last year’s Champs, will be a key player along with Maria Crosfield, Trezaquet Forbes, Ingrid Taylor, and Kellyann Carr.

The trip is fully sponsored by the Government of Jamaica and was made possible by a recent visit from a delegation from Trinidad, led by their sports minister, Shamfa Cudjoe. The delegation visited several schools and institutions, including the Jamaica Anti Doping Commission (JADCO), and held discussions with Jamaica’s Minister of Sports, Olivia Grange, and officials from the ministry. The Trinidadians are interested in setting up a high school program similar to the ISSA Boy’s and Girl’s Championships.

Keith Wellington, the President of ISSA, who leads the delegation, spoke positively about the initiative, saying that it helps to form strong partnerships with Caribbean neighbors and is positive for the younger athletes. He added that because of Jamaica’s success in sports, Caribbean neighbors are eager to learn and adapt some of their policies, which is good for the development of sports in the region.

The delegation will return to Jamaica on Friday.
