Fraser-Pryce Opens Her Season With 22.79

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Hansle Parchment opened their seasons, but Ackeem Blake, Megan Tapper and Fedrick Dacres shone at Velocity Fest 11, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger Series Meet. The event was held at the National Stadium in Kingston on Saturday, April 23.

Fraser-Pryce, the reigning world 100-meter champion, lost the women’s 200 meters to Anthonique Strachan of the Bahamas, 22.55 to 22.79 seconds.

Parchment, who got one of his best-ever starts, took the men’s 110-meter hurdles in 13.20 seconds. Rasheed Broadbell, who was at the shoulder of the Olympic champion, finished second in 13.31. Tapper topped the women’s 100-meter obstacles, hurdling clearly to 12.80 – her fastest-ever opener. Crystal Morrison finished second in 13.02 and Amoi Brown third in 13.33 seconds.

Battle of the Blakes
The men’s 100 meters saw the Battle of the Blakes, featuring Ackeem, the rising star and Yohan, the 2011 world champion. Ackeem prevailed in a personal best 10.08 seconds ahead of Yohan, timed in 10.11. Earlier in the heats, Yohan ran 10.13 seconds to Ackeem’s 10.15.

Candice McLeod won the women’s 400 meters in 51.57 seconds, while Janieve Russell recorded the second-best time of 52.17. Ronda Whyte, (52.26) and Rushell Clayton (52.29), were third and fourth, respectively.

Dacres threw the discus 65.98 meters to beat Traves Smikle’s 64.64 meters and a 60.79 by Chad Wright. Shadae Lawrence threw 62.36 meters for the women’s discus win.

Shanieka Ricketts won the women’s triple jump with 13.95 meters, and Tissanna Hickling, who opened with two foul jumps, won the women’s long jump with 6.49 meters.
