In what was arguably the greatest men’s 400 metres hurdles final field ever assembled at an Olympic Games, Norwegian Karsten Warholm produced a mind-blowing performance to shatter his own world record of 46.70 seconds, setting an impressive 45.94 seconds at the Tokyo 2020 games.
Warholm running from lane number six, got off to his usual fast start while being tracked by USA’s Rai Benjamin, who ran from lane number five.
Benjamin made a huge surge at the 300 metres mark of the race, but Warholm showed tremendous strength and composure to hold him off before shaking him at the tenth and final hurdle.
“This is so crazy,” said Karsten Warholm. “It’s by far the biggest moment of my life.
“I’ve been training like a f***ing maniac. I struggled to sleep last night because I had this special feeling in my chest. It’s like the feeling I had as a six-year-old on Christmas Eve. It’s a feeling you think you’ll never have again as you get older. But I had it last night.”
“I was so focused on getting that last medal in my collection, and now it’s all complete,” added the two-time world champion. “I need to set myself new goals, and I don’t think I’m done yet.”
Benjamin, who also went under the previous world record, was second in a USA national record of 46.17 seconds, surpassing Kevin Young’s 46.78 seconds.
The final saw six of the men setting personal best times and one season’s best mark. Alison Dos Santos of Brazil was third in a South American record of 46.72 seconds.
British Virgin Island’s Kyron McMaster also set a national record to finish fourth in a time of 47.08 seconds.
In fifth place was Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba in a season’s best time of 47.12 seconds. Also setting a national record was Turkey’s Yasmani Copello, who finished sixth in 47.81 seconds.
Estonian Rasmus Mägi was also in the record-breaking mood, setting a national record of 48.11 seconds to finish seventh. Alessandro Sibilio of Italy finished eighth in a time of 48.77 seconds.
