KC, Hydel stand tall on day 1 at Champs 2021

Kingston College (KC) and Hydel won two sprints hurdles each on Tuesday’s (11 May) opening day of the 2021 ISSA Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Champs.

In Class 3 100m hurdles, Daniel Clarke won the title for the North Street-based team in 13.04. He finished clear of STETHS’ Ricoy Hunter, 13.19 and Calabar’s Shaquane Gordon, 13.28.

In the absence of a pre-race favourite Vashaun Vascianna, KC still won the Class 1 boys’ 110m hurdles, thanks to Tajae Francis’ 13.52 run.

JC’s Neil-Matthew Sutherland also did not finish his heat, but luckily Jahiem Stern’s 13.78 gave them seven valuable points.

Hydel’s two victories came in the Classes 1 and 2 100m hurdles.
Kerrica Hill, 13.29 and Shania Myers, 13.92, gave them 1-2 in Class 2, while Oneka Wilson topped Class 1 in 13.60.

St. Jago’s Camoy Binger won the Class 3 girls’ 80m hurdles in 11.14, and Tiana Marshall of Wolmer’s took the Class 4 girls’ 70m hurdles final in 11.01.

Allem Pinto of STETHS edged out Andre Harris of St. Jago, 13.55 to 13.57 in the Class 3 boys’ 100m hurdles final.

In the day’s first final, Samantha Pryce of Holmwood won the girls’ 2000m steeplechase final in 7:07.12 ahead of Edwin Allen’s Sanyae Gibson, 7:13.63.

The boys’ 2000 Meter Steeplechase OPEN saw Krik Dawkins taking the top spot in 5:52.74 ahead of Calabar’s Rivaldo Marshall, 5:53.74.

In the field, KC’s Akeel Hanchard won the javelin open final with a throw of 62.93m ahead of Christopher Young of Edwin Allen, 62.12m.

Kavian Kerr of St. Jago won the Class 1 boys’ long jump with a leap of 7.81m (+4.9m/s wind). Luke Brown of Calabar finished second with 7.65m into a +3.5m/s wind.

Kerr said: “I want to dedicate this win to my mom and dad because they are my number 1 fans.”

Jamora Alves of St. Jago won the Class 2 girls’ shot put with a 14.93m throw. Rochele Salmon of Edwin Allen finished second with 14.49m.

KC lead the boys’ section with 55 points, 24 points ahead of Calabar, 31, St. Jago, 31, St. Elizabeth Technical, 26, and Jamaica College (JC), 24 after six finals.
After 10 finals, St. Jago is on top with 81 points on the girls’ side, five more than Hydel 76, Edwin Allen, 71, Wolmer’s 21 and Holmwood, 17.
