Starting this Saturday, the 22nd of May, athletes competing at the JOA/JAAA Olympic Destiny Series is likely to share over $2.1 million in prize money.
Last week, the JOA announced it would be supporting Jamaica’s track and field athletes buildup to the Tokyo Olympic Games by partnering with the JAAA to stage the Olympic Destiny Series.
The JOA has pumped $14.4 million into the preparation meets, $7 million will go towards the series of meets, and $7.5 million will go toward financing the National Championships.
The three meets will be on the 22nd of May, 29th of May and 5th of June. Jamaica’s National Championships, scheduled for June 24 – 27 at the National Stadium, is to select the country’s team for Tokyo.
Garth Gayle, President, JAAA, said track and field athletes have been yearning for this opportunity to compete and earn since the Pandemic struck in March 2020.
“Since last year March, many of our athletes have not been able to earn from the sport that they love, and this initiative has brought about an opportunity for us to showcase our athletes and give them an opportunity to earn,” said Gayle.
Christopher Samuda, President of sports’ parent body in Jamaica, noted that this strong support fits their mandate and will be replicated through the years.
“The JAAA is a treasured member of the Association. We always look towards ensuring that our relationships in the industry are built on solid foundations.”
