On this day, August 6, 2012, Kirani James created history for Grenada.
The victory by James was not only the first for Grenada, but it broke a streak of 7 wins by the United States in the event.
James’s time was a new national record of 43.94.
“I am just so proud,” James said. “This is not just for me; this is for my whole country. The whole place is going crazy right now. I am so excited. Everyone in Grenada will be proud. This is a great feeling. Nothing can describe what I am feeling.”
Luguelín Santos’s silver (44.46) was the Dominican Republic’s first medal in the men’s 400m. Lalonde Gordon’s (44.52) bronze was Trinidad and Tobago’s first medal in the event since 1964.
The Caribbean had two other men in the final, Bahamians Chris Brown, 44.79 for 4th and Demetrius Pinder, 44.98 for 7th.
