Some 10 countries call for Tokyo 2020 postponement

To date, at least 10 National Olympic Committees have called for the 2020 Olympic Games to be postponed, according to sports.ru.

Norway, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, United States, France, Canada, Spain, Brazil and Australia have all publicly said the Olympic Games can’t take place as scheduled because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Athletics Association has surveyed over 4,000 athletes who have overwhelmingly called for the Olympic Games to be postponed. A total of 78 per cent of athletes have called for the Olympics to be postponed and 87 per cent of respondees have said their training has been adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Dick Pound, IOC’s member, said the decision was made to push back the games.
However, there is no official word from the IOC.

“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided. The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know,” he said.

On Sunday, 22 March, IOC President Thomas Bach asked athletes and stakeholders for four weeks to make a final dcecision.

“Together with all the stakeholders, we have started detailed discussions today to complete our assessment of the rapid development of the worldwide health situation and its impact on the Olympic Games, including a scenario of postponement,” Bach said.

Several athletes, sporting federations and fans have called on the IOC to postpone the games because of the coronavirus, which has killed over 15,300 people worldwide.

The virus caused many qualifying events to be postponed or cancelled in the last two months. Some athletes are unable to train due to the containment measures in their country.
