The South African has not competed on the international circuit since suffering a knee injury while participating in a celebrity rugby match in October 20178. He got married the same weekend.

In his second local appearance, Van Niekerk won the 200m in 20.31 and 100m in 10.10. He ran a hand-time 10.20 a week ago.

“Was good pushing the body today,” he tweeted.

  1. Maybe… Since he missed the world championship last year so it’s very difficult to predict. He need to work hard and put more efforts.

  2. He looks ragged. To run that fast this early, looking that way is scary. He will definitely be in the hunt to defend his Olympic title. ??????……His first 400m will be at 44 LOW….

  4. Super surprised he ran a 100 that quick. This is a good sign. I’m guessing the 100 is harder on him than the 400 by a significant margin

  5. Good to see him running. However, all of this is at high altitude and there’s no wind info, so I’d take these times with a grain of salt. When he has some worthy competition or puts down a respectable 400m, then maybe the declarations that he’s back will be valid.

  6. Great to see Niekerk back in action. Hoping to see him at Racers Grand Prix in June. I think though that next year he will definitely be back to his absolute best.
