Bloomfield lowers Jamaica 400m record, Wasome wins at NCAA Champs

Akeem Bloomfield, for the second time in a month, broke the Jamaica 400m indoor record.

This time, however, it was at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships, staged at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas.

Bloomfield, formerly of Kingston College (KC), ran 44.86 seconds to stay the closest to Michael Norman of USC, 44.52, in the world record race.

In February, the only sub-45 seconds man at Champs, ran 45.02, which was then Jamaica’s indoor 400m record.

Nathon Allen, the other Jamaican in the field, and Bloomfield’s Auburn teammate, finished 5th in 45.27.

O’Brien Wasome was the only Jamaican winner on the day. Wasome, representing Texas, took the top spot in the men’s triple jump with 16.82m.

Clayton Brown, also of Jamaica and representing Florida, was 4th with 16.34m.

Raheem Chambers, also of Auburn, had a good day, running a personal best 6.53 for second in the men’s 60m. The winner was Elijah Hall of Houston with 6.52.

Cejhae Greene of Antigua was fourth in 6.61.

Natalliah Whyte turned the tables on Jonielle Smith, both representing Auburn, 7.12 (PB) to 7.19 for third and fourth respectively in the women’s 60m. Smith beat Whyte at the SEC Championships.

Aleia Hobbes led home LSU 1-2 in the event in 7.07 to Mikiah Brisco’s 7.11.

Kendall Ellis of USC topped the women’s 400m in 50.34, beating Kentucky’s Sydney McLaughlin, who got a world junior record of 50.36.

Sabina Allen, representing Campbell University, leapt 13.61m in the women’s triple jump, won by Keturah Orji of Georgia, 14.27m
