Taylor, Davis set Stadium alight with record runs

Calabar High School’s Christopher Taylor and Kevona Davis of Edwin Allen, two of Jamaica’s finest talents, were in record-breaking mood at the Digicel Grand Prix final held in the GC Foster Classic on Saturday (11 March).

Taylor, who stamped his dominance in the 200/400m in this his first Class 1 year, proved he is way better than the rest at this point. Drawn in lane four in the half lap event, the reigning world youth champion at 400m, covered the field from very early and entered the homestretch unchallenged. He powered down the straight to take victory in 20.59, a personal best, to beat closest rival, Andel Miller of Excelsior, 21.14 in the Under-20 boys’ section.

In the Under-17 girls’ equivalent, Edwin Allen’s Davis, a second year Class 3 athlete, proved she is the best schoolgirl sprinter in Jamaica this year.

The 15-year-old, who will be challenging Anneisha McLaughlin’s Champs record of 23.11 this year, led by about five metres off the curve and powered home in 23.32. Gabrielle Matthews of Hydel with 23.78 came in second and Ackera Nugent of Excelsior, third in 24.63.

Sachin Dennis, another rising star out of St. Elizabeth Technical High, took the Under-17 boys’ final in 21.10secs.

The girls’ Under-20 event went to Aneka Brissett of St. Jago in 24.16.
