Edwin Allen and St. Jago were crowned girls and boys champions, respectively at the conclusion of the Central Champs on Wednesday (8 March) at the GC Foster College track facility in Spanish Town.
Edwin Allen won the girls’ section with 406.5 points to beat Hydel, 339.5 and Holmwood, 339. St. Jago with 277.5 and Vere 158 rounded off the top five as Manchester ended 6th with 53.5.
On the boys’ side, St. Jago continued to dominate the region by topping the table with 423 points, well ahead of Edwin Allen, 111. Holmwood, 110, Manchester, 80, and St. Catherine, 66 finished in the top five.
Stefaan Taylor and Jevaughn Powell were boys’ 200/400 double winners on Wednesday’s final day. Taylor of Manchester took his double in Class 3 with times of 23.97 and 51.69, respectively, while Edwin Allen’s Powell’s double came in Class 2 with times of 21.82 and 48.17.
Kevona Davis ran a record 23.56 to win the Class 3 200m final, the fastest time of the day. Britany Anderson of Vere also lowered the Class 2 girls’ 200m record with 24.30.
Daniella Deer of Holmwood not only upset St. Jago’s Joanne Reid in the Class 3 girls’ 400m final, but also erased her record. Deer ran 54.87 to beat the Reid’s old mark of 55.76. Reid also went under the old mark with 55.03 for second place.
Nicolee Foster of Holmwood ran away with the Class 1 girls’ 400m title in 54.44 while Abigail Brooks of Hydel won the Class 2 girls’ 400m in 55.46.
Bridgeport High’s Malik Smith ran 47.20 for a new record in the boys’ Class 1 400m final.
In the 100m finals, for girls, Edwin Allen took Classes 1 and 4 with Tamia Campbell, 12.09 and Serena Cole 12.34, respectively.
Holmwood’s Sashieka Steele was the Class 3 winner in 12.00 and Julien Alfred of St. Catherine, Class 2 in 11.98
Ashanie Smith of St. Catherine raced to victory in the Class 1 boys’ final in 10.73 while Taiwane Garriques of St. Jago, 11.02 in Class 2 and St. Jago’s Vashaun Vascianna, 11.74 in Class 3, were also winners.
Ackelia Smith set a new record of 5.83m to win the Class 3 girls’ long jump.
Lushane Wilson of St. Jago, winner of the Class 1 boys’ high jump on day one, added the boys’ triple jump Class 1 title with a record 14.81m.
In the 4x100m finals, Edwin Allen ran record times of 46.30 in Class 4 and 45.30 in Class 3 while St. Jago took Class 2 also in a record 45.46 and Hydel Class 1 in 45.29.
St. Catherine won the Class 1 boys’ 4x100m in 41.12, Brigdport Class 2 in a record 42.76 and St. Jago Class 3 in 45.20.
In the sprint hurdles, on the girls’ side, Holmwood’s Shanette Allison ran a record 13.48 to win Class 2. Danae Nembhard was also in record breaking form, taking down the 70m hurdles Class 4 event in 10.68.
Crystal Morrison of St. Jago took the Class 3 80mh in 11.39 while Gabriell McDonald of Edwin Allen ran 13.74 to win the Class 1 equivalent.
The boys’ sprint hurdles produced three records with St. Jago’s Rasheed Broadbell, 14.17, the 110m hurdles Class 1 winner; Clinton Simmonds, 14.27 in Class 2 and Jahvel Granville, 13.96 to take the Class 3 100m hurdles final.
