Kirani James cruises to victory

BEIJING, China – Grenada’s Kirani James cruised to an easy victory in his heat of the 400 metres at the World Championships here on Sunday.

James held back considerably but came through to win in 44.56 seconds and hold off Luguelin Santos of Dominica, who clocked 44.62. Third was Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago in 44.97.

In the first heat, Machel Cedenio of Trinidad & Tobago, 44.54 and Peter Matthews of Jamaica with a personal best 44.69, secured qualifying spots.

Javon Francis of Jamaica 44.83 was second in heat 3 and along with Bahamian Michael Mathieur 45.07, made it through to the semis.

Steven Gardiner of Bahamas 45.26 also made progress, so too was Renny Quow, who was second in heat 6 in 44.54 and Bahamian Chris Brown, 4th in 44.68.
