Windward Road are the early leaders in the girl’s category, while John Mills heads the boy’s division at the end of day one of the 36th INSPORTS Junior High & All-Age Athletics Championship at the National Stadium.
After three girl’s finals, Windward Road lead with 33 points, ahead of John Mills (27.5), Coburn Gardens (23.5), Calabar (14), Louise Bennett-Coverley (12) and New Day (5).
The John Mills pair of Tijuana Constantine and Hadiya Gray finished first and second respectively in the Class One girl’s high jump to give their school its first points from the female side. Constantine won gold with a mark of 1.50m, ahead of Gray, who registered 1.48m for silver, while Windward Road’s Brandy Cole secured the bronze with 1.44m.
Adanna Wallace gave Windward Road its first gold medal of the three-day event, winning the Class Two girl’s long jump in which John Mills failed to record any point.
Wallace won with the a leap of 4.66m, beating Coburn Gardens’ Timaira Wilson (4.63m) and Shamara James (4.51m) of Louise Bennett Coverley.
Ramona Hylton outclassed her rivals in the Class Three girl’s high jump, sealing gold with a clearance of 1.50m.
The Calabar athlete finished well ahead of Tatyana Crawford (1.35m) of John Mills and Coburn Gardens’ Rasheedah Wright, whose best of 1.25m secured bronze.
In the sole boy’s final on the day, John Mills scored 10 points after Tyrese Markland struck gold in the Class Three boy’s long jump, while teammate Nemoy Cockett got a point for his eighth-place finish.
Markland’s best the field of 18 competitors with a jump of 4.99m, comfortably ahead of New Day’s Teyhran Campbell, who did 4.58m and Windward Road’s Maleke Bramwell, who snatched bronze despite Coorey Coore of Shortwood clearing the bar at 4.49m.
Trailing John Mills in the overall boy’s table are New Day (7), Windward Road (6), Shortwood (5), Louise Bennett-Coverley (4), MICO (3) and Swallowfield (2).
Meantime, seven finals will be contested on day two, which will also see the official opening ceremony taking place at 1:00 pm. INSPORTS Chairman Don Anderson will deliver the main address.
