John Mills Junior High receives the championship trophy from Sport Minister Hon. Olivia Grange after winning the 40th INSPORTS All-Age & Junior High Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on April 26, 2018.

John Mills clinched the 40th and final staging of the INSPORTS All-Age & Junior High Athletics Championships in stunning fashion at the National Stadium.

The champions registered their 23rd hold on the prestigious trophy to deny defending champions Windward Road of a fifth straight win.

In arguably one of the most exciting editions in ages, John Mills’ coach Ransford Spaulding showed all his experience to marshal his team to a four-point victory as they ended the championships on 376 points.

Second-placed Windward Road amassed 372 points but still had a plenty to cheer about as they topped the boys table with 204 points, two more than their fiercest rival.

But it was in the girls’ category that proved decisive for Spaulding and his charges, as they scored more points than Windward Road, who finished third and four points behind second-placed Constant Spring.

This was always going to be the last hurrah and what a fantastic way to bring the curtains down on one the longest track and field events in the country’s history.

Overall the battle was always a ‘two-horse’ race and so it was throughout the two-day event.

By midday, John Mills had erased the 15-point deficit at the close of day one to open up a lead of 36 points after taking gold in the girls’ Class one long jump, the Class two boys’ and girls’ 400m as well as the Class one girls’ 400m final.

However, Windward Road fought back brilliantly like true champions to narrow the gap by two points with only the Open 4x400m relays to come.

John Mills took the girls’ race with Windward Road finishing fourth, before the latter claim the boys’ crown ahead of Constant Spring and John Mills.
