Windward Road will take a 15-point lead heading in to Thursday’s (26 April) final day of the two-day INSPORTS All-Age & Junior High Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
The defending champions, who are aiming for a fifth straight hold on the coveted title, led the combined points standing with 121 points after 17 finals at the end of Wednesday’s opening day.
Arch rival and 22 times winners John Mills are close with 106 points, followed by Constant Spring on 103.5 points.
Shortwood Practising are in fourth with 75 points, followed by Calabar (54), Cockburn Gardens (53.5), Swallowfield (45), New Day (35) and MICO Practising on 34 points.
Despite winning five gold medals, John Mills still find themselves trailing the champions who looked on course to defend their crown.
In the day’s marquee event – the Class one boys’ 100m final – Christopher Crawford gave Windward one of two gold medals on the day when he outclassed his rivals to win in 11.70 seconds. Elton Hyatt (11.81) of Constant Spring was well beaten into second, while Shortwood’s Giovanni Taylor (11.97) took the bronze.
The girls’ equivalent was won by John Mills’ Kimmoy Brown in a pedestrian 13.50 seconds which was well outside of the 12.30 seconds meet record set in 1998 by Tamara Barnett of Windward Road.
Shadai Prince (13.91) of Windward Road took the silver, while Tyice Richards (14.12) of Calabar secured the bronze.
In the field John Mills’ Leopaul Foster struck gold in the boys’ high jump Open with a mark of 1.70m.
John Mills took the top-two spots in the girls’ shot put Open, as Shaniel Allen (8.17m) finished ahead of teammate Chevanne Thompson (7.97m), while Cockburn Gardens’ Sonya Watson (7.74m) was third.
The championships continue on Thursday (26 April) starting 9:00 am.
