Rovane Williams and Shiann Salmon were in sparkling form on Friday’s penultimate day of Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, destroying obstacle records in the process.

Rhodes Hall High’s Williams, who trailed Jauavney James into the homestretch, pressed on the gas pedal and raced across the finish line in 49.94secs, only the third ever sub-50 at Champs. The mark, in the second year of the event, beat the previous record of 51.37.

Jaheel Hyde, formerly of Wolmer’s, ran 49.49 and 49.01 in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Malik James-King of Calabar also found some extra motivation in the straight away as he too got by the fast starting James – 50.03 to 50.07secs.

Salmon of Hydel was also brilliant in her timing as Vere’s Sanique Walker led the field into the straight. Salmon finished very strong in 55.78secs to beat Ristananna Tracey’s 55.81 2001 mark.

Walker, the early race leader, ended second in 58.03secs.

Dean Clarke of Calabar topped the Class 2 boys’ 400m hurdles in 52.67secs.
