USA Track and Field plans to select the top three athletes who have the new tougher IAAF standards from the trials for the 2020 Olympics and future global championships.

It means athletes who might be in line for a world rankings invite under the new qualification procedures but who didn’t have the standards would not be considered under USA’s cut-throat first-three system.

USATF told Letsrun.com: “For the U.S., the three highest-placing finishers at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, and who have the 2020 Olympic Games qualifying standard, will select themselves for the U.S. Team. For World Championships, the U.S. selection process is the same but with the IAAF marks.”
