KINGSTON — Jahnoy Thompson looked the sharpest from the semi-final round of the men’s 200m after posting the fastest time to win the second heat on Day 3 at the Jamaica National Championships on Saturday night.
Thompson showed his quarter-mile strength in the home stretch when he eased away from his rivals to win semi-final 2 in a new personal best time of 20.29 seconds.
World Junior Championships bronze medallist in 2016, Nigel Ellis, representing Elite Performance, ran 20.51 seconds for second place, while 100m champion Tyquendo Tracey of MVP closed late to take third and advanced to the final as well.
Romario Williams of GC Foster College clocked 20.70 to grabbed the fourth and final spot from the heat.
Meanwhile, Rasheed Dwyer of Sprintec, the Pan American Games 2015 silver medallist, won heat 2 in 20.59 seconds.
Dwyer came into the home straight with the lead and then eased away from the pack to signal his intention to win the national title.
Advancing to the final as well were Renard Howell of LSU with a time of 20.77 for second place, while Oshane Bailey of Sprintec who was disqualified in the 100m, placed third in 20.83 and Daniel Jamieson from Vykn Perform (20.99) grabbed fourth.
In the U20 boys’ race, Michael Bentley of UTECH stayed on course to win the sprint double after qualifying the fastest with a personal best time of 21.02 seconds.
