The Jamaican sprinter, who also won the 200m World Championships in 2013, has been facing the challenge of balancing her training and competition schedule between the two events. Despite her impressive PB of 21.79 in the 200m set in 2021, Fraser-Pryce recently expressed her concerns about the difficulties of the double and hinted that she may only focus on the 100m from now on.
“I think last year I said that was it. And it may possibly be it for me for real and I’ll just focus on the 100m,” Fraser-Pryce was quoted as the Gleaner saying.
From Double Champion to 100m Specialist: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s Next Move
Fraser-Pryce is widely considered one of the greatest female sprinters of all time, with a long list of accomplishments that include multiple Olympic and World Championship medals, and numerous other titles in the 100m and 200m events. However, the demanding nature of sprinting and its toll on the body have made it increasingly difficult for athletes to excel in both distances.
“The double is very hard. It is strenuous. The workload that you need to do it is definitely hard, but I don’t know,” she added.
While the decision to focus on a single event may surprise some fans and followers, it is common for sprinters to specialize in a single discipline as they reach their later years in the sport.
For Fraser-Pryce, the 100m has always been her signature event, and by focusing solely on this discipline, she may be able to extend her career and continue to compete at the highest level.
Regardless of the future of Fraser-Pryce, she will always be remembered as one of the greatest sprinters in the history of the sport. Her determination, passion, and commitment to excellence have inspired countless young athletes and fans, and her legacy will continue to live on for generations to come.
