SPANISH TOWN, JAMAICA – Hydel High School will be declared the Central Champs winners after a scoring error gave Edwin Allen High School the victory on the final day of the Championships held at GC Foster College last Thursday (3 March). SEE THE RACE VIDEO VIDEO BELOW

At the end of the two-day Championships, the points table showed Edwin Allen as the winner with 357 points, followed by Hydel with 355.5 points and Holmwood with 330 points.

The scoring error occurred in the Class 2 girls’ 100m hurdles final, where Holmwood’s Kiara Meikle won in a record-breaking 13.16 seconds, ahead of Hydel’s Camoy Binger, who also recorded the same time. Both athletes will now share the record of 13.16 seconds, which is lower than the previous record of 12.21 seconds set by Kerrica Hill in 2022.

However, the error was in the placing system for third place. Jerese Allwood of St. Catherine, according to the results, finished in third place. Hydel’s Jody-Ann Daley got fifth place. But video footage from Trackalerts TV clearly showed that Daley finished in third place, and Allwood finished in fifth place.

Hydel High School would have picked up two more points, taking their overall tally to 357.5, while Edwin Allen High School would remain on 357 points. Therefore, Hydel High School will now be declared the winner of the Central Champs, following correcting the error.

The victory is significant for Hydel High School as they prepare for their first Girls Champs victory later this month.
The error is a reminder of the importance of accurate and reliable scoring systems in sports events and their impact on the final results.
