Russell Burton, formerly of St. Andrews and Camperdown, also ran the anchor leg of UT’s 4x100m relay team that finished second in 44.41 seconds.

AUSTIN, Texas – Friday’s collegiate action from the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Built By The Home Depot ended with the home crowd on its feet cheering a Longhorn relay team to victory.

Senior Pedrya Seymour led the charge for Texas in the hurdles with her time of 12.97 seconds to win her heat. Sophomore Rushelle Burton followed with a win in her heat as well and clocked 13.14 seconds. Mariam Abdul-Rashid crossed the line in 13.50 and Ariel Jones ran 13.51 with a win in her heat. All four of the times were in the top nine to advance to the final with Seymour running the top time in prelims.

Senior Haley Crouser came away with the collegiate victory in the Section A of the women’s javelin. She had a throw of 51.29 meters (168-3) to be the best college thrower in the field. Professional thrower Ariana Ince did have a farther measurement but only collegiate athletes were eligible for the win in the event. Crouser’s throw was just a bit shy of her season opener two weeks ago at the UTSA Invitational.

The first race of the day was the 4×100 meter relay with the Longhorns advancing their men’s and women’s team through to their respective finals.

The women ran first with the crew of Teahna Daniels, Serenity Douglas, Zola Golden and Burton. They combined to run 44.61 seconds and hold the No. 4 time in the prelims to make the final.

For the men it was O’Brien Wasome, Micaiah Harris, Washington Brown and Steffin McCarter teaming up to run 40.02 for the No. 4 time to make the final.

After running a strong opening leg for the women’s 4×100, Daniels clocked in at 11.22 seconds to win her preliminary heat of the 100 meters. Her heat was one of the few to have a legal wind reading on the day and her time ranked fifth for the day.

“I was really happy about those two teams,” Buford-Bailey said. “First of all on our women’s team we have two 400 meter runners and a hurdler, and on the men’s team we had two jumpers. So for them both to be top four teams heading into the finals that’s really outstanding.”

Junior Mariam Abdul-Rashid ran next to senior Ariel Jones in the final of the 400 hurdles and they came away 3-4. Abdul-Rashid clocked 57.87, just off her PR from the prelims, marking the two fastest races of her collegiate career. Jones ran 58.05 to improve on her prelim time.

Texas entered a pair of Longhorns in the men’s 400m hurdles invitational section and came away with solid times. Kirema Macharia finished in fifth place and Isaiah Lucas was sixth.

A meet record did go down on Friday night and it went to a Lifetime Longhorn as Ashley Spencer won the women’s 400m hurdles invitational with a time of 56.43. Another Lifetime Longhorn was in the race and Melissa Gonzalez finished in third place in 58.02 seconds.
