Delano Kennedy and Rickiann Russell achieved personal bests in the 400m finals at Jamaica’s High School Championships, Champs held at the National Stadium in Kingston on Thursday (30).
With an energetic atmosphere, Kennedy, representing Edwin Allen High School, secured the gold in the Class 1 boys’ race in 45.27 seconds. Meanwhile, Russell, from Holmwood Technical, claimed victory in the Class 1 girls’ race in 51.26 seconds.
In the boys’ event, Malique Smithband from Jamaica College placed second in 45.74 seconds, followed by Jasauna Dennis from St. Elizabeth High School in 45.87 seconds.
In the girls’ competition, Russell and Oneika McAnnuff from Hydel High battled on the backstretch and into the straight before Russell pulled away to clinch the win. McAnnuff also recorded a personal best with 52.11 seconds, while Kacian Powell from Edwin Allen High School finished third in 52.76 seconds.
Tahj-Marques Whit from Kingston College won the Class 2 boys’ gold medal in 47.73 seconds. Omary Robinson from Jamaica College finished second in 48.49 seconds, followed by Nickecoy Bramwell from Calabar High School in 48.88 seconds.
In the Class 2 girls’ race, Jody-Ann Daley from Hydel High School secured the gold medal in 53.61 seconds. Sabrina Dockery from Lacovia High School placed second in 54.12 seconds, and Kitania Headley from St. Catherine High School finished third in 54.13 seconds.
Christopher Ellis from Calabar High School took the gold medal in the Class 3 boys’ race in 50.49 seconds. Jordan Rehedul and Eshanee Porter from Kingston College claimed second and third places with times of 50.67 and 50.69 seconds, respectively.
In the Class 3 girls’ event, Nastassia Fletcher from Hydel High School won the gold medal in 53.99 seconds. Breana Brown from Excelsior High School finished second in 55.58 seconds, while Rhianna Lewis from Rhodes Hall High School placed third in 56.15 seconds.
