Former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell could return to the track earlier than expected. According to information reaching TrackAlerts.com, Powell had his 18-month ban reduced to less than a year.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), it is understood, agreed for the ban to be reduced to 11 months.
Powell was listed to contest the men’s 100m at Friday night’s American Track League in Houston, Texas, but because the blessings the Jamaica Anti-Doping Agency (JADCO) was not received in time, he had to withdraw from competing.
The 31-year-old Powell and three-time Olympic medallist Sherone Simpson tested positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrone at Jamaica's national trials last June (2013). The Jamaica Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel suspended them for 18 months.
On Friday evening, hours before the track meet, Powell tweeted, “God is GOOD” but made no reference of the reduction in his ban or his return to competition.
Powell's manager Paul Doyle could not be reached for comment.
