BIRMINGHAM – Aggie javelin thrower Ioannis Kyriazis earned the men’s SEC Freshman of the Week honor for the second time this outdoor season following a career best performance at the Stanford Invitational.
Kyriazis placed second in the Invitational division of the javelin on the Stanford campus with a throw of 247 feet, 7 inches (75.47) to finish as the top collegian. The winning mark of 255-6 was produced by Nike’s Riley Dolezal, the 2013 USATF champion and 2014 USATF runner-up.
The effort by Kyriazis surpassed the previous meet record of 245-3 set by Oregon’s Cyrus Hostetler in 2009. As the freshman leader among collegians for the 2015 season, with the next best frosh mark at 230-5, Kyriazis also ranks fourth amid all collegians and third on the world junior list.
On the Aggie all-time list Kyriazis moved to the No. 3 performer behind Sam Humphreys (272-9) and Nery Kennedy (251-8) while moving ahead of Ty Sevin (247-5) by two inches.
Texas A&M will visit Tempe, Arizona, for a second time this outdoor season for the 36th annual Sun Angel Classic this weekend with action on Friday and Saturday on the Arizona State campus.
The Aggies men and women each remain No. 1 in the updated team computer rankings produced by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
A&M tops the men’s rankings over Florida, Oregon, LSU, USC, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida State and Texas Tech. In the women’s rankings the Aggies lead Florida, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Oregon, USC, Georgia, Baylor and Florida State. The SEC has 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams ranked among the top 25 this week.
