Walnut, Calif. – Five University of Alabama women’s track & field athletes competed on Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and all five achieved personal bests in their respective events, including three performances that rank among the Crimson Tide's all-time top 10 in those events.
Kimberley Ficenec began Friday for Alabama with a stellar outing in the women's 800 meters, finishing second overall in a time of 2 minutes, 5.97 seconds. That personal best time by Ficenec ranks No. 9 on the all-time Alabama outdoor 800 list.
Late Friday night, four Alabama runners competed in two different sections of the women's 5,000 meters. Katelyn Greenleaf competed in one section while Meropi Panagiotou, Rebecca Stover and Hannah Waggoner all competed in another one.
Greenleaf got things started with a fourth-place finish in her race with a time of 16 minutes, 30.68 seconds, a personal best that is an improvement of more than 17 seconds off her previous PR. That performance ranks seventh on the all-time Alabama outdoor list. In the other 5k race, Panagiotou came on with an even faster outing in a time of 16:29.13, a mark that ranks fourth on the all-time Crimson Tide list and improves her PR by more than 20 seconds.
Stover was 13th in 16:49.64 (the 11th-best time in UA history) while Waggoner finished 1th in 16:55.73. Stover's time was a PR that improved her personal best by 41 seconds while Waggoner's time marked an improvement of her PR by 41 seconds.
Friday's action concluded Alabama's competition at the Mt. SAC Relays. The distance corps returns to Tuscaloosaon Saturday, then takes a week off from competition as final exams loom. The rest of the Crimson Tide is competing Saturday at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla. The full team will resume action in two weeks at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
