Jaylen Slade was in top form on this weekend (19 Dec) at the Galleria Games in Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
The 17-year-old sprinter, who is being coached by former Jamaican sprint hurdler – Dwight Thomas – won the 60m/200m double in record times.
Slade, representing IMG Academy, ran 21.13 to lower the 17-18 boys’ 200m record of 21.35. He beat Logan Popelka, 21.60 and Aaron Bell, 21.69.
In the 60m dash, Slade blazed across the line in 6.70 seconds to beat the old mark of 6.75s. David Foster, 6.75 and Caleb Jackson, 6.85 were second and third respectively.
Slade, who was in his first competitive meet of the year, is now number one in the nation at both 60m and 200m.
Thomas, who represented Jamaica at three Olympics Games, is a sprint coach at IMG Academy. He won 4x100m gold at the Berlin 2009 World Championships in the 4x100m.
He won five Carifta Games gold medals in 4x100m, 100m and sprint hurdles.
Thomas is the Winnipeg 1999 Pan Am Games 110m hurdles bronze medallist.
