AUSTIN, Texas – Rushelle Burton returned to form in the 100m hurdles at Saturday’s marked the conclusion of the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Built By The Home Depot.
She rolled to a win in the women’s sprint obstacle in 12.64 seconds. Her time was wind-aided (3.3m/s) and ranks as the No. 3 time in school history under all conditions.
Burton was happy with the win after finishing second a year ago as a freshman. She also has her eyes set on breaking the Texas Relays meet record during her career. Her time Saturday was faster than the record of 12.83 but not eligible due to the wind.
“It was a great pleasure for me. Last year I got second, but my main goal was to come back out here and win so it wasn’t a failure,” Burton said. “Words can’t explain how happy I’ll be if I get that record.”
Burton was joined by a group of teammates as Texas showed off its depth in the hurdles with four women making the final in the 100 hurdles. Senior Pedrya Seymour finished third in 12.85 seconds, for her fastest season opener of her career. Junior Mariam Abdul-Rashid took sixth in her fastest time run in all conditions, clocking 13.18. Senior Ariel Jones took ninth.
Tonea Marshall of LSU with 12.73 was the second best hurdler on the day.
“I was pretty satisfied. We had some ups and downs but we had some real bright spots today for example with Rushelle Burton running a personal best,” Interim Head Coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. “It was a little windy, but still it was great to see her get back into form.”
