TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama senior Alex Amankwah has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Men’s Runner of the Week for the second time in 2015, the SEC Office announced Tuesday.
Amankwah earned the honor after winning the men’s 800 meters on Friday at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. The senior ran a personal-best time of 1 minute, 45.91 seconds, setting a new meet record en route to winning the event ahead of excellent competition. The time also marked the third-fastest 800-meter race in Alabama history and ranks as the fastest time in the NCAA and ninth fastest in the world so far in 2015.
The Tide senior also earned the honor earlier in 2015 for his record-setting indoor 800-meter performance at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville on Jan. 24. Amankwah, a native of Ghana who immigrated to the United States, ran 1:46.86 to claim the Alabama school record, the meet record, and the Ghana men’s national record in the event in that January race.
The Crimson Tide track & field team continues its season this weekend, competing at the 2015 Border Clash hosted by Mississippi State University on Friday, April 10.
