Briana Williams has decided not to defend her World U20 sprint double title. She will forego the remaining two years of her junior career.
Williams, who won gold at the Pan Am Junior Championships on Friday night (19 Jul) and helped Jamaica to silver in the 4x100m on Saturday, disclosed that was the last time completing at the junior level.
“The end of an era. Tonight I ran my last race at the junior level for Jamaica,” she wrote on her social media page.
“It’s time for me to step aside and allow the next generation of Jamaican girls to represent the black, green and gold,” added Williams.
The 17-year-old has two more years of junior eligibility, which means World U20 Championships 2020 and Pan Am Junior 2021.
Williams, in 2018 and 2019 won three sprint gold medals at the Carifta Games, took the Austin Sealy Award on both occasions.
Also, in 2018, she became the first Jamaican to win the World U20 sprint double title.
At the Jamaica Trials in June, she ran 10.94secs, the first Jamaican junior to run sub-11secs.
“I’m grateful to all of you who have made me feel so welcome as a Jamaican ambassador and athlete,” said the Carifta Games U20 100m champion.
